Troubleshoot a Till That Cannot Produce a Z-Read

How to troubleshoot a till that cannot produce a z-read by checking the output format, printer connection, and bit version settings.

This article explains how to identify whether the till should produce a printed or digital z-read and how to resolve the most common setup issues that prevent it from completing successfully.

πŸ“ŒNote:

  • A till can be configured to produce a z-read as either a physical receipt or a digital file.

  • If a USB receipt printer is being used, the Receipt output type must be set to Windows Driver and the correct printer drivers must be installed.

  • Driver installation is managed by the user's local IT department.

Check the Z-Read Output Format

  1. Open the Stock module.

  2. Click System Settings, then click Till Set Up.

  3. Select the till that is unable to produce a z-read.

  4. Click the Output Details tab.

  5. Check the Receipt output type setting.

If Receipt output type is set to Serial port, the till is configured to print a physical z-read from a connected receipt printer.

If Receipt output type is set to Windows Driver, the till is configured to print through a USB receipt printer that has the correct drivers installed.

If Receipt output type is set to Text file or Text file no prompt, the till creates a digital z-read instead of printing a receipt.

πŸ“ŒNote: The default location for a digital z-read receipt is C:\Gamma\Receipts.

Check the Receipt Printer Connection

If the till is set to print through Serial port and still does not produce a z-read, check the physical printer setup.

  1. Check that all receipt printer cables are connected to the correct ports and are not loose.

  2. Restart the receipt printer, then wait for it to finish rebooting.

  3. Attempt another z-read.

Match the Application Bit Version to Windows

Sometimes a till cannot perform a z-read if Gamma and the operating system are using different bit versions.

  1. Go to the Gamma installation folder. This is usually C:\Gamma\LeisurePOS.

  2. Press the Windows key, then search for This PC.

  3. Open This PC, then click Computer and System Properties.

  4. Check the System type field to confirm whether the operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit.

  5. If the till needs to run in 32-bit mode, copy the contents of the x86 folder, then paste them into C:\Gamma\LeisurePOS. Overwrite the existing files if prompted.

  6. If the till needs to run in 64-bit mode, copy the contents of the AMD64 folder, then paste them into C:\Gamma\LeisurePOS. Overwrite the existing files if prompted.

  7. Attempt another z-read.

Contact Support

If the till still cannot produce a z-read after you have checked the output format, printer connection, and bit version, contact Gamma Support for further assistance.
